Radical Return for Le Mans Legend

22nd April 2009

Le Mans racing legend Andy Wallace made his first sportscar outing in the UK in 12 years in the Radical UK Cup at Rockingham last weekend.

Wallace, who won the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1988, shared an SR8 with Radical Cup regular Roger Green for his first sportscar event on home soil since the 1997 FIA GT event at Silverstone.

Wallace has spent the majority of his career racing prototypes in the American Grand-Am series and has racked up three Daytona 24 Hours victories.

“It was a very late deal but fantastic fun,” said Wallace from Buckingham.  “I know Roger from years back and we keep in contact.  The opportunity came up for him to drive the car and he offered me the second seat".

“It was a difficult learning curve because I had never been to Rockingham before and I missed the majority of testing so only got about six laps before the race".

“The Radicals are great to drive.  The acceleration is akin to an LMP1 car and if they had carbon brakes, the cornering speed wouldn’t be far off either.  The aero is good but the car moves around much more because its so light.  It was a one-off outing but if the opportunity arises again I would love another go.”

Wallace and Green claimed seventh overall in Saturday’s 75 minute race.
