Radical Masters: Yas Marina, 14-16 October 2010
19th October 2010
The 2010 Shell Racing Solutions Radical Masters season drew to a dramatic conclusion last weekend, at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. The final event of the European racing year saw a packed grid of 42 cars, with competitors from the local Radical Saudi Cup and Radical UAE Cup joining in on the fun.
Local experts Jordan Grogor and Bassam Kronfli put their Radical UAE SR8 on pole for Race 1, setting the fastest time of 2m09.125s. Behind them, a brace of guest drivers were showing impressive pace on their Radical debuts, with Formula 2 stars Kelvin Snoeks/Benjamin Bailly, Jolyon Palmer and Pescarolo works ace Christophe Tinseau second, third and fourth respectively. Radical UK Cup champions 360 Racing were fifth, Ross Kaiser setting the time.
The first race of the event saw Slim Racing’s F2 pairing, whilst behind them, Kaiser took advantage of Palmer starting from the pit lane, clean track in front of him at the rolling start enabling he and co-driver Terrence Woodward to take second at the flag on their Middle Eastern debut. Less than four seconds separated them from Kronfli at the end, the leading pack a considerable distance up the road from the Radical UK Works Team pairing of James Abbott and Rob Wheldon, also taking first in the Supersports Class.
Race two saw Bailly and Snoeks draw out a commanding lead over the rest of the field, from lights-to-flag. Grogor and Kronfli in turn kept a six-second gap to Radical Saudi Cup frontrunner Prince Abdul Aziz Bin Turki, passing him early in the race, ahead of F2’s Dean Stoneman, keen to make amends after retirement from Race 1, as the first Supersports Class competitor home.
Following the final race, the event’s class and overall prizes were awarded at a glitzy evening, held in the Yas Hotel’s rooftop bar. Season awards were also presented; Radical UAE’s Carl Rolaston picking up the cheque for EUR 5,000 and the Best Team Award.
Attention now turns to preparations for the 2011 season, with lots of exciting news to follow. Watch this space for upcoming announcements.
